At Knoxville Christian School, our days are filled with bright smiles, happy laughter, and a shared passion for growing together. Above all else, everything we do, from our morning chapel gatherings to our playground adventures, seeks to bring glory to God.

When people hear about Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), they often think of standard classroom skill-building, like learning how to manage feelings, listen to friends, and work well in teams. While those are all wonderful goals, at Knoxville Christian School, SEL is something extra special. We view social and emotional growth as a genuine invitation to learn how to love one another as Jesus does. We do not just teach kids how to be good teammates. We help them discover how uniquely loved they are by God and how much real joy comes from sharing that love with others.

Faith-Based SEL: Grounding Emotional Growth in Scripture

Traditional SEL focuses on essential life skills like self-awareness, empathy, and positive decision-making. We love these foundations, but we tie every single one back to the sweetest source of all: Scripture.

When we talk to our students about who they are, we remind them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made by a Heavenly Father who adores them. When we show patience and kindness, we talk about the beautiful fruits of the Spirit working in our hearts. Kindness isn’t just a classroom rule; it is a joyful response to the grace we have been given. By blending faith and emotional growth, we get to nurture happy, resilient hearts that treat everyone with gentle respect and sincere care.

Team Building and Problem Solving in Elementary School

While classroom learning is wonderful, the best SEL lessons happen when we play, laugh, and work together. Recently, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders experienced this during a special challenge created by Mr. Ickles.

The challenge was straightforward but thrilling. Hidden words were tucked away, and the students needed to find them, bring them together, and unscramble a secret message. You could feel the pure excitement in the room. The kids jumped right in, cheering everyone on, listening carefully to everyone’s ideas, and making sure every single teammate felt included and valued. It was a beautiful display of teamwork, patience, and shared encouragement.

While the challenge seemed like a super fun game, the secret message held a very special truth meant to bless their hearts. Our amazing 5th graders worked diligently together and unscrambled the sentence in record time. During lunch, as the whole room celebrated the big win, Mr. Ickles shared the wonderful lesson behind the game: the message encouraged the kids to seek God and explore His Word with the same excitement, enthusiasm, and joy they showed while searching for the hidden words. It was a great reminder that seeking God with all our hearts is the most exciting adventure of all.

Servant Leadership and Joyful Memories at KCS

To make the victory even sweeter, the challenge came with a spin on the wheel of consequences for Mr. Ickles, landing directly on Ms. Raspberry’s recommended Egg Shampoo Challenge.

The following Friday, with giant grins across everyone’s faces, Mr. Ickles proudly marched outside the cafeteria. The winning students got to crack fresh eggs right over his head and smear them into his hair. The outdoor space exploded into laughter, happy cheers, and unforgettable giggles.

That joyful afternoon was about so much more than a messy stunt. It showed our students what true humility, fun, and servant leadership look like in action. Long after the egg shampoo was washed out, the warm memory of that joy will stay tucked in their hearts, reminding them how wonderful it is to belong to a loving Christian community.

Nurturing Confident and Caring Christian Students

At Knoxville Christian School, Social and Emotional Learning is not simply a lesson plan; it is a daily celebration of God’s love. By wrapping practical social skills in faith, warmth, and fun, we get to help raise confident, caring kids who shine bright wherever they go.

When our students learn to care for one another, solve problems with gentle words, and seek God with wholehearted excitement, they are not just succeeding in school; they are learning to light up the world for Him.
