Job Description
The Elementary Vice Principal, under the direction of the President / Head of School / Principal, implements and enforces school board policies, administrative rules and regulations. The Elementary Vice Principal will work cooperatively with the administrative team, support school-wide goals and initiatives, and be held directly accountable to the school principal.
The Elementary Vice Principal should align with the mission of Knoxville Christian School which is to develop students spiritually, emotionally, academically, and physically with Jesus Christ as their standard and the Holy Bible as their Foundation, preparing them to be Godly representatives in their community, church, and home. The Assistant Principal should use God as their guide to demonstrate excellence as a teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum education includes a Master’s degree in educational administration and/or supervision or equivalent; at least three years experience in educational administration with experience in Christian school administration desirable, but not required.
- Have supervisory, managerial and budgetary experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – ACCOUNTABILITIES
It is expected that the Elementary Vice Principal will
- Have the ability to accomplish the goals and objectives assigned by the principal and school policy.
- Meet regularly with elementary school teachers to ensure coordination of programs and prompt problem resolution.
- Help the principal with the revision of the parent/student handbooks, employee handbooks, substitute teacher handbooks, the course description catalog, and other such items.
- Maintain a physical presence with the students by attending and, when possible, participating in school chapels, assemblies, athletics events, and other presentations.
- Respect professional ethics that require confidentiality concerning the sharing of information about students, parents, or staff.
- Interview Elementary students seeking enrollment and the parents of those students.
- Provide leadership in the supervision of staff, improvement of instruction, and selection of curriculum.
- Arrange for substitute teachers when needed, and assist them in successfully carrying out their responsibilities.
- Coordinate annual end-of-year inventory of textbooks, furniture, equipment, and other items for all secondary classrooms, and keep adequate records of same.
- Assume all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
- Suggest ways to improve the offering in the Elementary program.
- Research programs suggested by the principal as possible curriculum improvements.
- Develop and uphold a curriculum turnover spreadsheet.
- Adheres to and enforces board policy, school guidelines, administrative directives, and Master Contract, and school standards.
- Serves as an instructional leader to the Elementary School by monitoring implementation of professional development in classrooms and grade level/content area meetings in accordance to the school improvement plan.
- Oversee Elementary School faculty and staff including serving as an instructional leader assigning and directing work, interviewing, evaluating performance, and resolving issues.
- Provide leadership in planning the master schedule.
- Resolve Elementary School student issues by meeting with students, parents, teachers and other school staff and designing a plan of action.
- Consistently implement handbook policies in Elementary School to maintain proper discipline and conduct.
- Assist in the development of relevant policies and procedures with regard to student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff, and parents by writing up and demonstrating need and support for such policies.
- Work with and assist faculty in the development of effective classroom discipline and organization.
- Oversee fire, storm and tornado drills and codes and implement effective emergency evacuations and lock-downs. (must know all buildings)
- Assist in curriculum development to meet the needs of all students.
- Oversee attendance of Elementary School students.
- Organize and administer in-service teacher training as suggested by the principal.
- Develop and manage the school’s international program.
- Perform and other duties as assigned by the principal.
- Ensure that Elementary School classrooms reflect a professional and Christian environment.
- Have knowledge of the physical and emotional development of children, and understand the problems they face.
- Keep abreast of major current trends in education in general and Christian education particular through reading, graduate studies, conference, and contacts with other principals and educators.
- Coordinate and supervise the parent teacher conferences in the Elementary School program, when necessary.
- Assist with accreditation
- Assist in setting enrollment goals in conjunction with the Board of Directors, faculty and administrators.
- Make follow-up calls to all new student inquiries in coordination with the president.
- Serve as primary contact person for parents throughout the admissions process.
- Maintain information on prospective families.
- Participate in greeting visitors to the school
- Conduct preliminary interview to screen applicants for appropriate match to KCS education and ability to integrate into KCS curriculum
- Review applications with principal and faculty for selection decision
- Set up interview with faculty member(s), greet family at interview, and notify subject teachers and administrative staff of student visits.
- Develop new procedures as needed in conjunction with principal.
- Give initial introduction to KCS to prospective parents through open houses, individual tours, and special events.
- Keep abreast of admissions procedures and timetables in Knoxville’s private schools as well as other NCSA schools.
- Stay up-to-date of applicants’ progress through the application/enrollment process.
- Maintain contact with class teachers and class advisors for information on families and status for re-enrollment.
- Coordinate school publicity with local media by submitting articles to local newspapers.
- Relay information to the web master for posting on our website and social media.
- Assist in retention efforts through continual monthly communication with parents.
- Oversee communication with families including maintaining a social connection.
- Perform and analyze exit interviews to identify attrition patterns and communicate findings to administration, board and faculty.
- Attend weekly administrative staff meeting and other meetings that may be pertinent to enrollment.
- Oversee that an alumni database is being managed and maintained.
- Provide information and counsel to the principal on the educational challenges and procedures for the Elementary School level of the school.
- Offer professional advice to the principal on the issues, needs, and operation of the middle school and high school using appropriate recommendations based on thorough study and analysis.
- Provide input to the formation of the school’s long-range strategic plan.
- Attend all administration meetings and provide input when requested.
- Deal directly and frankly with the principal in an earnest effort to resolve differences of opinion when they exist.
- Show support for school policy and decisions to the staff, parents, and public.
- Provide input to the principal that will help establish, implement, and refine procedures for the recruitment, orientation, supervision, evaluation, and motivation of personnel.
- Ensure that all elementary school personnel have current written job descriptions.
- Provide input to the principal for staff development and in-service programs on and off campus.
- Frequently walk-through and evaluate the elementary school staff and provide each employee with a written evaluation. Provide appropriate information to the principal regarding the evaluations.
- Ensure that all personnel files are current, treated with appropriate confidentiality, and adequately safeguarded.
- Make objective recommendations, with adequate supporting data, to the principal regarding cases of assignment, transfer, promotion, demotion, nonrenewal of contract, or dismissal.
- Interview, develop and train a pool of competent school-wide substitute teachers to ensure continuity of the school program.
- Provide input to the principal for the development and implementation of the school’s long-range financial plan.
- Provide input to the principal for the annual budget.
- Oversee and manage the school’s book budget expenditures and procedures.
